It is a jewel made up of remnants of Atlantic forest covering more than 100,000 ha. The varied geological forms emanate from the juxtaposition of different geomorphological complexes. Rising from sea level to more than 2,000 m in altitude, these ensembles offer an extraordinary biodiversity. These preserved areas are of major interest for their undeniable beauty but also and above all because they concentrate rare plant and animal species. The exceptional geomorphological and biogeographical character has reinforced the endemic character of part of the biodiversity here. Animals threatened with extinction can be observed here. Tapirs, black monkeys, jaguars (rare), the fabulous and unfortunately endangered harpy can (sometimes) be seen. It is this same geological and floristic exuberance that justifies a strict protection that preserves the park from human predation linked to the strong demand for building land. In these places are born many rivers of great importance for the local populations. If the entrance of the park is in the north, (São José do Barreiro), we find on the side of Paraty beaches, more or less isolated, villages born in the great time of the caminho de ouro, or an interesting visit of an Indian community in Paraty-Mirim. The best time to visit is from May to August, the driest period
