A charming small village with 23 000 inhabitants about 240 km from São Paulo, Cunha is a good step for those taking Via Dutra or Carvalho Pinto towards the Serra da Bocaina or the Mantiqueira and Parque Nacional do Itatiaia. It was known as 1730 Vila do Falcão, from the name of the Portuguese family that established there, and was located on the famous first road of gold, the "caminho do ouro" which connected the mines of Minas Gerais to Paraty, from which ores and precious stones were shipped to Portugal. With the advent of this path, the hamlet was transformed into a village and took the name of the governor of the harbour of São Paulo, Francisco de Cunha. The tourists come to Cunha in search of tranquility and relaxation in a green setting. The place is also known for its handcrafted ceramics.
