Utuado is a charming mountain town, the first easily accessible from the northwest of the country via the PR-10. Founded in the 18th century, its name comes from the Taino word otoao, which means "between the mountains". Today it is known as "Pueblo de Vivi", Vivi being the river that runs through it. In terms of surface area, the city is large, but it has only 28,000 inhabitants. Historically, Utuado is also the coffee town par excellence, as the black gold industry was the major activity of the region in the 19th century, making Utuado the leading producer of coffee in Puerto Rico
