A popular seaside resort, especially in the 1960s, and a picturesque fishing port, Porto Ercole is a prime tourist destination. On a hillside overlooking an azure cove, the old town has preserved the vestiges of its rich past under the Republic of Siena and then under Spanish rule. These include its imposing walls and four forts built by the Spanish in the 15th century, which majestically dominate the landscape. According to some historians, it was on a beach in Porto Ercole that the painter Caravaggio died of malaria in 1610. Since then, a monument in town pays tribute to him.
