Of Etruscan origin, Orvieto is magnificent! Built on a hill of volcanic tuff, the town appears to the traveler in all its splendor, dominating a landscape of vineyards as far as the eye can see. The Duomo of Orvieto remains one of the most representative monuments of 13th- and 14th-century Italian architecture. To get to the historic center, you'll have to take the funicular up to the top...Every corner of Orvieto is a treasure trove: from the incomparable frescoes by Luca Signorelli to the Etruscan remains, from the alleyways to the caves, there's something to marvel at. The town lies between the Paglia and Chiani valleys, halfway along the Florence-Rome freeway.
