Smolenice, Szomolány in Hungarian or Smolenitz in German, is a village of 3,200 souls located at the foot of the Little Carpathians in the district of Trnava, about 60 km northeast of Bratislava and 25 km northwest of Trnava. Smolenice is mainly known for its unique castle, rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century, but also for its natural heritage, including the Driny Cave, the westernmost in the country, and Mount Záruby, the highest point of the Little Carpathian Mountains. Smolenice, famous for its mead (a honey-based drink), is also the end of the wine route that runs along the Little Carpathians.
