Rémalard is the administrative center of the new commune of Rémalard-en-Perche, which also includes Bellou-sur-Huisne and Dorceau. A former possession of the Counts of Perche, the commune is associated with Octave Mirbeau, journalist, avant-garde advocate and feared pamphleteer (1848-1917), who spent his youth here. Centuries earlier, it was here that William the Conqueror established several defensive mottes to seize the seigneury of Bellême in 1077. Rémalard boasts a beautiful church built between the 12th and 15th centuries, a little out of the village, but accessible via a pretty street lined with 18th-century houses.
