Montecchio... This name may sound familiar to you, because the Montecchi family is said to have originated in this town, the most famous member of which is said to have been Romeo, Juliet's legendary lover. On the heights of the town, two castles face each other, the Castello Bellavista (Juliet's) and the Castello della Villa (Romeo's). The rivalry between the two families who owned the castles is said to have inspired the writer Luigi da Porto (1485-1529) to write the tragedy Novella novamente ritrovata, the story of Romeo and Juliet, which in turn inspired William Shakespeare (circa 1595) for his drama about the lovers of Verona, Romeo Montaigu and Juliet Capulet.
