Here's a town worth visiting for the remains of its 17th-century fortifications and its famous Purbacher Türke (a statuette depicting a turbaned figure on the roof of a building) dating from 1532, a reminder of the Turkish attacks of the 16th century. Situated around 15 km from Eisenstadt, this charming little town enjoys a privileged lakeside location. Known as the wine capital of Burgenland, Purbach stretches its sun-drenched vineyards over the hills, and lines its beautifully preserved old quarter with beautiful houses. The town's central square is superb. Too bad it's a bit spoiled by the cars that park there...
