About 60 km west of Vienna, in the Mostviertel, Sankt Pölten, one of Austria's oldest cities, became the capital of Lower Austria in 1986. Here, the Baroque and Art Nouveau styles of the old town rub shoulders with contemporary districts of futuristic architecture. The ancient Aelium Cetium, nowa Landeshauptstadt (state capital), stretches along the banks of the Traisen between the Danube and the Pre-Alps. It was here that Lower Austria's first monastery was established as early as 791, in Carolingian times. The monastery was dedicated to St. Hippolytus, whose name became Pölten. The town can be reached by train.
