A land of plains and hills, Lower Austria is not an alpine skiing region. However, in winter, once the snow has fallen, the small village of Semmering welcomes skiers with 5 ski lifts. Just the thing to get you started... A small, historic resort linked to Vienna by the mountain railway, whose tracks were built with some technical prowess between 1848 and 1854. Many of the capital's inhabitants learned to ski on Semmering's slopes. The historic Semmering railroad line has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So even without snow, even without skiing, it's a beautiful journey
