Durmenach had a tumultuous history: in 1354, the people of Basel burned down the castle and the entire village, and in 1789 violent anti-Semitic riots broke out. The same was true in 1848 with 75 houses of Jewish families burned down and of course the two World Wars.... Although very few returned after all this, there is still an Israelite cemetery. Nowadays, it is the festivals that make the reputation of this village, the oldest shopping centre in Haut-Sundgau, famous: the Heimart Hay Fair, which takes place on the 3rd Sunday in May and the Sundgauer Buramart Farmers' Fair, on the 3rd Sunday in September. Both attract 15 to 20,000 visitors.
