The city of Assen has just under 70,000 inhabitants in an area of 84 km2. The city dates back to 1259 and the establishment of the convent of nuns Maria in Campis. The city became an independent municipality by order of Louis Napoleon in 1807 with the incorporation of surrounding municipalities. It obtained its rights as a city in 1809. The city grew a lot after 1900 and had 22,000 inhabitants before the war. The Assen area was the scene of Operation Amherst with French paratroopers coming in to disrupt German forces in April 1945, just before the city was liberated by the Canadians.
