One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, Groningen, the pearl of the north and capital of the province, has an incredible charm. Surrounded by a wide canal, the city center is car-free for the pleasure of tourists and onlookers. Damaged by the bombings of the Second World War, it combines modern architecture and historical buildings with great success. Its renowned university gives it a capital city feel. Out of 200,000 inhabitants, the city has about 50,000 students! Groningen is famous for its modern architecture, but also for its museums. The Groninger Museum is one of the most popular.
