With 109,000 inhabitants, Emmen is the largest city in the province of Drenthe. In fact, the municipality of Emmen alone has just over 56,000 inhabitants. This large town does not have a historical center, but has built its reputation on the Dieren animal park and the megalithic tombs (protohistoric period) that can be discovered in the vicinity. Emme's nickname is the "butterfly city" which comes from the famous zoo that added a beautiful area dedicated to butterflies in 2016. Emmen is an open and green city since the post-war reconstruction. Nature is present in the city.
