Enriched in the Middle Ages by the cloth trade and its beer brewers, Amersfoort was a very opulent city whose well-preserved center bears witness to its past splendor. Today, the city has 155,000 inhabitants and owes its growth to the chemical and metal industries. Not far from Utrecht, it is one of those cities that are prospering in a region of strong economic growth. Worth seeing is the church of St. Horis flanked by its 13th century tower, the "Onze Lieve Wrouwe Toren", a 100 meter high gothic church tower dating from the 15th century.
