With its 12 km length and 2 km width, Vlieland is the most remote island of the Wadden Sea. Located between the islands of Texel and Terschelling, its name comes from the Vlie, a current in the Wadden Sea. Vlieland has only one village. In the past, it had two villages and was evacuated in the 18th century because of floods. It used to be part of North Holland, like Teschelling, but since 1942 it is part of Friesland. The island is largely forested and has a landscape feature: the Vuurboetsduin, a forty meter high dune with a red lighthouse on top. This dune and its lighthouse symbolize the island.
