Valjala is a small municipality located inland on the island of Saaremaa. If you are in the area, don't miss a visit to the village church. It is a fortified Germanic church, dating from the 13th century. It is the oldest stone church on the island and perhaps even in Estonia. It is a mixture of Gothic and Romanesque architecture. A little further on, complete the visit by discovering the Valjala fortress. Built in the 12th century, it was the most important Oeselian stronghold at the time. It was restored in 1227. Today, the whole is interesting to discover and offers a nice walk to do with the family.
