Situated on a narrow peninsula, Estonia's Venice - as it's nicknamed because of its ubiquitous water features - still retains memories of its prosperous days as a prestigious spa resort, frequented by the Russian court. Tchaikovsky was also a regular visitor... But the town's history goes back much further. Today, Haapsalu is working hard to regain its status as a seaside resort, with some 10,000 inhabitants according to the 2017 census. The town is a good base for excursions, particularly to the nearby islands of Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Vormsi, which are less frequented yet closer.
