The island of Muhu (7 000 inhabitants) is reached by Saaremaa on a road built on the stone dike connecting the two islands.Muhu, the third largest island in the country, welcomes a large number of holidaymakers during the summer period. Attached to its neighbour by a dike, this small island can serve as a step in a journey towards Saaremaa where its history and traditions connect it closely.Freed from 1532, earlier than in the rest of the country, Muhu's peasants commemorate this freedom during the folk festivities during which women display the famous traditional dress of the island, sometimes regarded as the symbolic costume of independent Estonia. The main village of Muhu is Koguva, one of the best preserved in Estonia with its stone fences, its wooden houses and its old trees. You can visit the outdoor museum of local peasant history. Discover the nine island houses, the most famous of which is Pädaste, the fortress of Muhu (just before the dam for Saaremaa), the cliffs of Üügu, the mill of Eemu and, in the village of Liiva, a th century church.
