Alton is located on the south shore of Lake Winnipesaukee. It is a small community of 5,000 people that gets denser in the summer. Visitors come to walk the shopping streets and enjoy the beach south of the lake. The village of Alton Bay, incorporated into the town of Alton, is the heart of this summer animation, with its adorable wooden lakefront cottages. The town is surrounded by forests, including the Mount Major State Forest, where you can hike. From the top of the mountain, which rises to 544 m, there is an exceptional view of Lake Winnipesaukee. The Alton Bay State Forest, an 85-hectare area, is also part of the city.
