Sullivan is the hometown of George Hearst (1820-1891), senator and father of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951), himself the grandfather of Patricia Hearst, whose kidnapping and antics made headlines in the 1970s. Kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army (an American far-left terrorist group), she later participated in several actions of this group. Arrested in 1976 and convicted, she was finally rehabilitated by President Bill Clinton in 2001. Her biography inspired many authors and directors.
