The city was founded by Daniel Gray, a native of New York, who built a hotel in 1845. It is the high point of the railroad line that connects St. Louis and Kansas City, with a railroad tunnel built underneath the town. You can stop at Gray Summit for the Shaw Nature Reserve, a vast arboretum that covers 5 square miles. This natural area is dedicated to environmental education and the maintenance and restoration of flora and fauna. The reserve is home to several historic homes (including the Joseph H. Bascom House), a large meadow, and an extensive wetland. Over 23 km of trails run through the reserve.
