The only two active volcanoes in the Hawaiian archipelago, Kilauea and Mauna Loa, are located in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park which covers 133,200 hectares. The island of Hawai'i was born from these two volcanoes 400,000 years ago. Mauna Loa has not erupted since 1984, but it remains active according to volcanologists because it can wake up at any time. The situation is quite different for Kilauea, which is younger and in permanent eruption today; specialists even consider it as one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The latest eruption was on September 29, 2021, and is still in progress in June 2022.
