The Kilauea Iki trail is an easy hike that provides access to the lava from the 1959 eruption. From the Kilauea Iki Overlook parking lot, the trail winds through the vegetation for about 15 minutes to descend the crater wall. Once at the bottom, the vegetation suddenly disappears to make way for the lava and its extraordinary formations. It is possible to do the hike in return or to make a loop by taking the Crater Rim trail on the way back. Except for the short but intense climb, the hike is easy and flat.
