Hotel built to accommodate the many visitors who came to view the crater lava at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
This hotel, overlooking the summit of Kilauea, was built in 1877 to accommodate the many visitors who came to watch the lava from the then-erupting Halemaumau Crater. From the more expensive rooms, there is a breathtaking view of the Kilauea caldera. The other rooms are comfortable but their decoration is a bit plain. We come here mainly to have the privilege of spending a night in the national park, literally a stone's throw from the lava, and to enjoy the beautiful dining room that overlooks the glowing cloud of the crater.
