Real name: San Juan de los dos Ríos del Tena. Population: around 33,000. Tena is the capital of the province of Napo, home to a wealth of non-renewable natural resources that attract covetousness and fuel economic-ecological conflicts. In the 1930s, gold was the object of all covetousness, but then oil took over. Since the start of oil production on February 15, 1967, black gold has turned the region into an energy and economic hub for the country. Located at the confluence of the Tena and Napo rivers, Tena is a busy, pleasant and welcoming city, despite the humid heat. Few traces remain of the old colonial town founded in the 16th century, and the traditional houses on stilts have given way to modern constructions. The rivers that flow through the city try in vain to provide a little freshness. Their banks are equipped with seaside resorts, where young people gather on weekends. A new university, with its imposing architecture, aims to retain local students in the Amazon. Since its construction, young people have had the opportunity to study while remaining close to their families. Living in Quito is much more expensive, so we're sure this initiative will help revitalize the region. Kayaking and rafting, two of the region's specialties, also contribute to the development of tourism. The weekly market is held on Saturdays, and the city is abuzz with activity from early morning.
