Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa is a large, unattractive town located about 100 kilometers east of Retalhuleu and 30 kilometers west of Escuintla, surrounded as far as the eye can see by sugarcane fields. All the interest of the city lies in the archaeological wealth around, since the region was an important center for the Mayan cities of the south Pacific coast. Above all, Cotzumalguapa was one of the main cities of Mesoamerica. Because of its proximity to Escuintla, its small sites and museums can easily be visited in the same day, before returning to its base camp, such as El Paredon.
