The city is best known for its three golf courses, including Muirfield, headquarters of the Hon, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. If golf is your goal when you come to the area, leave nothing to chance and make a reservation to ensure you get to play. The coastal route will take you past a succession of beaches, golf courses, small fishing ports, marinas and beautiful scenery. The beaches are very popular with windsurfers. Just before Edinburgh is the village of Prestonpans, site of an important battle between the Jacobites and the English which took place in 1745, during the second uprising.
