North Berwick is the most charming coastal town in Lothian. Its superb location facing the sea is made exceptional by Bass Rock, a bell-shaped island that is home to a huge colony of gannets. The harbour was founded in the 12th century and the prefix North was added to differentiate the town from its southern neighbour, Berwick-upon-Tweed. It is a perfect base for exploring the area, with its castles and quality museums. The bravest can enjoy its beautiful beach for swimming and a section is set up as a protected pool for children. From Edinburgh, it takes 35 minutes by train to North Berwick.
