The posterity of Lanark comes mainly from the small adjacent village of New Lanark. From the beginning of the 19th century, the most important cotton production in Scotland was located there and Robert Owen made it a world famous laboratory of Utopian Socialism. In 2001, the old industrial sites and housing were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their great historical value.
