Cangas del Narcea is probably the oldest town in Asturias, at 396 m above sea level, and archaeological excavations have shown that its settlement dates back to prehistoric times. Because of its rugged relief, it is also, after Oviedo, the largest municipality in the region. Since its nearly 13,000 inhabitants are spread over 285 villages, scattered over an area of 825 km². With an exceptional natural environment that has been preserved thanks to the Fuentes del Narcea Park, the town also has a rich historical heritage, as evidenced by its Benedictine monastery of San Bautista de Corias and a number of Baroque buildings.
