Located about 30 km southeast of Sisian, on the road leading to Iran, Goris has become the main gateway to Nagorno-Karabakh since it declared its independence in 1991, and the only one since the Armenian defeat in the Karabagh war in the fall of 2020, which brought the Azeri border to the city's doorstep. But this quaint rural town, nestled in the forests covering the surrounding high mountains, is worth a visit. The town was developed during the Soviet era, but it has retained some of the streets lined with rustic stone houses with elaborate balconies, typical of local architecture from the late 19th century. But it is mostly visited for its more unusual dwellings, troglodyte dwellings built in the fairy chimneys that dot the sides of some of the mountains in its immediate vicinity, reminiscent of the landscapes of Cappadocia.
