About 20 km south of Vayk, in the Vayots Dzor, the Vorotan Pass (2,400 m above sea level), so named because of the powerful river which is the main axis of penetration in the extreme south of the country, opens the doors of the province of Siounik. The river, a tributary of the Araxis, has carved vertiginous gorges. But the road down from the pass does not hint at the gaping depths that await us further south; after skirting the vast expanse of water of the Spendarian Reservoir, it crosses a plateau dominated to the west by the jagged Zanguézour mountain range, riddled with volcanic stones once spattered by the craters bristling the Karabagh mountains.
