Calimera means "good morning" in Greek. It is one of the 9 municipalities (Martano, Calimera, Sternatia, Zollino, Melpignano, Corigliano d'Otranto, Castrignano dei Greci, Martignano and Soleto) that make up what is known as the "Salentine Greece", a geographical entity where griko, a dialect derived from Byzantine Greek, is still spoken. In this linguistic enclave, the culture and folklore typical of the cities related to the Greek-Byzantine civilization have been preserved. Worth seeing is the beautiful church of San Brizio overlooking Piazza del Sole and the Natural History Museum of Salento, as well as the Placa and Gurgulante dolmens along the road to Melendugno.
