Squinzano is home to a monument whose fame is the pride of its inhabitants: the Abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate, located seven kilometers to the northeast. According to legend, it was founded in the 12th century by Tancredi of Hauteville, the last Norman king. It houses the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions of Salento, which highlights the richness of Salentine heritage and customs, as well as the Byzantine-style frescoes that used to decorate the interior of the church. Squinzano is also the name of a DOC red wine produced in the area between Lecce and Brindisi, based on the Negroamaro grape.
