Martignano is the smallest municipality in the Greek Salento, the linguistic island of the Salento, where griko, the Greek-Byzantine language passed down through oral tradition for centuries, still echoes in the alleys. Only 1,700 souls live in this charming little town. Its existence dates back to the 9th century and it is known as Longobardia, thanks to the monks who settled here and invented two important liturgical codes, now kept in the Corsiniana Library in Rome. In Piazza Palmieri you will find the palace of the same name which houses the offices of the Parco Turistico Culturale Palmieri, a tourist information point.
