A stroll through the cobblestone streets and the baroque city center of Galatina, nicknamed "the navel of Salento", will be an opportunity to witness the artistic golden age of the city (between the Renaissance and the Baroque period). However, the jewel of Galatina is a Gothic building: the Basilica of St. Catherine of Alexandria, a must-see. Built by the Count of Lecce Raimondello Orsini-Del Balzo, decorated at the request of his wife Marie d'Enghien, it offers the visitor a cycle of frescoes with shimmering colors, where the lesson of the Tuscan painter Giotto is interpreted by the various artists according to their own sensibilities.
