It is a port city of about 25,000 inhabitants and the capital of the department of Río Negro. It is located on the eastern bank of the Uruguay River, which separates Uruguay from Argentina (an international bridge, located 5 km from the city, allows crossing the river). Although it is neither an obvious tourist destination nor a beauty that can compete with world heritage sites, it has an enigmatic charm that attracts more than 5,000 visitors each year. Its economy was traditionally based on meat production until the closure of the region's largest packing plant in 1975.
