Villa Soriano, known as "La Historica", is located in the department of Soriano, on the banks of the Negro River, only 5 km from its mouth in the Uruguay River, and 45 km from Mercedes, the departmental capital. Its foundation dates back to 1624, making it the first city established by the Spanish Crown in the Banda Oriental region. Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the region was populated by the Chanás Indians. One of its founders, the friar Bernardine de Guzman, named the town Santo Domingo de Soriano, the patron saint being Santo Domingo de Guzman. Today it is a quiet town where life is good.
