The city, with 100,728 inhabitants, was founded in 1783. It was involved in the patriotic struggle from the very beginning, since the May Revolution in 1810 (with Gualeguay and Gualeguaychú), and fought against the Spaniards, then against the Portuguese, and finally against the Unitarians, for the Federalists. On May1, 1851, General Justo José de Urquiza gave his famous speech in which he called for a revolt against the "gaucho" Juan Manuel de Rosas, who ruled Buenos Aires with an iron hand. Urquiza then became the head of the Argentine Confederation, before being assassinated in 1870. There is a tourist office at the intersection of D. Elía and Galarza streets.
