A few kilometers north of Colonia del Sacramento is Real de San Carlos, a former military base named after King Carlos III of Spain. On site, don't miss the San Benito chapel and its representation of the Santo Negro, the first black saint of the Catholic Church. Also, visit the tourist complex developed by Croatian businessman Nicolás Mihanovich who, in 1908, built a hotel-casino, a port and the famous Plaza de Toros bullring. Although this site is now abandoned, it is still possible to visit it during a guided tour offered by a local agency.
