About 2 km from Canillo is the thousand-year-old sanctuary of Meritxell, the real Lourdes of Andorra: it is the most visited monument in the principality, especially since 2014, the year in which Pope Francis awarded it the distinction of minor basilica. Dedicated to the Virgin Meritxell, the patron saint of all the Andorran valleys, the temple was originally a church, built in 1658 on the remains of a Romanesque building. The most significant event in the sanctuary was the fire that swept away the church on the night of 8 September 1972, the day of the patron saint (and national holiday), which is celebrated every year with great pomp and circumstance.
