The legend of the city's foundation is based on the birth of the Polish people and their migration from the ancestral land of the Slavs. Lech, grandfather of Mieszko I, moved west and founded his city on the nest of a white eagle. Historically, Mieszko I established his court here at the end of the 10th century, making it the seat of the Polish primate. One of the first places to visit during a stay in Gniezno is its cathedral. Now a listed Polish monument, it was the scene of the coronations of the first five Polish kings. It is also famous for housing the relics of Saint Adalbert.
