This charming town of over 100,000 inhabitants rises at the confluence of the Prosna and Bernardynka rivers. Kalisz is the first Polish town to be mentioned in texts dating back to the 2nd century AD, when the Greek geographer Claudius Ptolemy noted its existence under the name Kalisia. Some even claim it to be Poland's oldest city. Its destruction by the Germans in the First World War (August 1914) marked its darkest hour. By contrast, it was relatively unscathed during the Second World War. Today, Kalisz is a pleasant city to visit, with a rich religious heritage.
