This lake, in the middle of the countryside, lies 15 km east of Gniezno, in the direction of Poznań. With a total surface area of 348 ha, it lies at the heart of a protected nature park dedicated to it. It boasts five islands, the largest of which, Ostrów Lednickise, is an important archaeological and ethnographic reserve with a direct link to Piast history. It is in fact the homeland of the pagan Polanes tribe, who made it their stronghold and economic, military and political heartland. The remains of the first Piast palace, one of the country's first churches and an archaeological museum are well worth a visit.
