This fairly prosperous town of 30,000 inhabitants is now one of the largest in the region, but does not play a leading political role. Its geographical position (a dozen kilometers east of Poznań) is surely the reason for this. The site on which the town is located is, in fact, a very ancient settlement dating back to the Neolithic period. Swarzędz was once known for its textile production. Today, its reputation is based on furniture manufacture. Originally a large village, its population increased tenfold during the Soviet era, without affecting the charm of the place.
