The town was first mentioned in 1238, when it served as a border fortress for the Duchy of Mazovia. In the 13th century, it was conquered by the Teutonic Knights, but returned to Poland a century later. From the 15th century onwards, the town grew rapidly until the mid-17th century. Following the first division of Poland, Bydgoszcz became part of Prussia. This was followed by many comings and goings, making Bydgoszcz sometimes Prussian, sometimes Polish. At the end of the First World War, Bydgoszcz returned to the Polish border, only to suffer the full force of Nazi barbarism.
