After 647 km, the Danube ends its German course here. Passau is one of the jewels in the crown of eastern Bavaria. It has a population of around 50,000 and lies on the border with Austria. A peninsula at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers, it is a magnificent city, rich in history and culture (it boasts around 36 churches). In summer, it's bustling with people. Terraces and flowers are everywhere. Its narrow, winding cobbled streets come alive. Like Regensburg, the town has an Italian flavour. And with good reason: the population was decimated by half during the Thirty Years' War, so Italian architects came to the rescue and rebuilt the entire town in Baroque style, with pastel facades.
