Some say it is the most beautiful baroque town in Austria. Situated on the border with Germany, on the banks of the river Inn, this magnificent town boasts a central square where beautiful painted houses line up superbly. The first mention of this town dates back to 804. In 1316, the Counts of Bavaria granted Schärding its town privileges. Its fortifications, of which some remains remain, date from the middle of the 15th century. The town became Austrian, together with the Bavarian part of the country, in 1779. Following the floods of 2002, the town was completely renovated. But further floods in 2013 damaged the colourful facades.
